Don Markstein's Toonopedia. The complete series was first collected into two volumes in and by Dark Horse Comics. Harvey Kurtzman founded the satirical Mad magazine in ;  an early fan was onetime cartoonist Hugh Hefner ,  who founded the men's magazine Playboy in Hefner, whose opinion prevailed, preferred the more difficult, fully painted, outlineless look. Comics historian Don Markstein said that Little Annie Fanny "reached a high point seldom achieved by cartoon art". Hefner edited each episode, often requiring detailed changes to ensure that the series remained true to the magazine's editorial style.
